Mission Statement The mission of the Haywood County Arts Council is to enhance the life of our community through the arts by inspiring all ages to experience the world of the arts, promoting regional art and artists, building partnerships to explore new cultural opportunities and preserving our mountain artistic heritage.
Arts Council Produced Activities & Descriptions
The JAM Project (Junior Appalachian Music) - through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Haywood County Arts Council works with grades three through twelve to rediscover their musical and cultural heritage. Robby Robertson, Marian McRae and brothers, Trevor and Travis Stuart are instructors.
Arts Calendar - an annual list of all arts council presented events.
Arts In The Schools - a collaboration with the Haywood County School System to enhance educational opportunities through visual and performing artists presented in the schools throughout the school year. Programs have included Anne Lough, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Atlanta Ballet, John Roberts and Tony Barrand, Jonas, plus many others.
Fundraising Program - the arts council’s annual campaign to raise the funds necessary to carry on the programs and operations of the arts council year-round; the program includes direct requests, mailings, sponsorship program, grant writing, parties & events.
Grants Program - the arts council is considered a Local Distributing Agent (LDA) by the state Department of Cultural Resources, we seek grants from the state and federal government, and disperse monies through mandated programs. We also seek grants for specific projects from other sources such as the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the Southern Arts Federation & the Janirve Foundations. We have given grants through these various programs to individual artists and organizations providing arts projects in the community. Recipients over the years have included Voices in the Laurel, Trevor Stuart, Spotlights Youth Theater, Trina Hannah, Smoky Mountain Folk Festival, Janice Swanger, Autumn Showcase, Michael Youngwood, and the Women’s Auxiliary among many others.
International Festival Day - A juried arts and crafts show on Main Street of downtown Waynesville including dancers from Folkmoot, USA and a variety of international food vendors.
Gallery 86 - a vital art gallery featuring local & regional visual artists on display at 86 North Main Street, Waynesville.
HCAC Newsletter NEWS - a quarterly newsletter written & produced by the arts council’s staff and members featuring stories, articles & information about arts council events, programs & opportunities plus other arts oriented events in the county.
Office Activities - financial management & bookkeeping, publicity, marketing, information & resource center, grant writing & administration, sponsorship development, contracts, negotiation, production & ticket sales for events, board & committee facilitation, database management, etc.
The Student’s Recital - an annual spring concert recital of Haywood County music students; an opportunity for children to play on a world class Steinway concert grand piano and on a professional stage at the Performing Arts Center.
Sunday Concert Series - a concert series once a month in the Waynesville Public Library Auditorium featuring some of the region’s (& sometimes the world’s) leading performers. A small, intimate acoustic setting which is free to the public.
Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival - a world class summer chamber music concert series. The musicians are in residency at Warren Wilson College for five weeks and come to Waynesville to present five chamber music concerts.
The Piano Series - a series of concerts throughout the year designed to feature the arts council’s Steinway concert grand piano housed at the Performing Arts Center. Talent ranges from local treasures to international touring stars including Thomas Uchtmann, Butch Thompson & Mark Levine.
