My love of painting came as an unexpected benefit of an expressive arts workshop. I experienced excitement and absorption and discovered my love of moving paint across the surface of paper or canvas. Permission to engage in free creative expression brought to me both delight and insight. I have always loved art and artists, and the smell of an art studio. It was a dream come true to actually immerse in this process myself. Favorite to me are the works of the Impressionists and the Abstract Expressionists, and I am inspired by those artists. Also inspiring to me is the beauty of nature in landscape and skies, as well as patterns found in plants, weavings, fabric, and antique rugs. Painting is my refuge and solace. I find art making very healing and promoting of peace, wellbeing, and contentment.
Art has been described as a path toward healing; Shaun McNiff wrote “Art heals.” Pat B Allen has described “Art as a way of knowing.” Both of these statements have proven true for me. I believe art comes from connection to one’s soul. “All art is a gift of the soul” from the Baha’i Writings. I continue to be amazed at the fun and joy that I find in art-making and hope to learn more and more how to apply paint to canvas in a pursuit of expression, exploration and beauty.
