The Mountaineer

May 11, 2023

The Haywood County Arts Council will bring the hills alive with music and visual arts during its youth Mountain Music and Arts Summer Camp July 24-28 held at the Waynesville Recreation Center.

The camp focuses on cultivating youth creativity, exploring different artistic mediums, connecting to traditional Appalachian culture and making friends. Choose from half-or full-day camp sessions, with instruction in mountain music, visual arts, traditional dance and spoken word.

The theme of the camp is preserving creative Appalachian culture and exposing youth to the many traditional and modern techniques. The camp will culminate in an exhibition and performance by the students on the last day.

The morning session focuses on music, with students able to pick from guitar, banjo or fiddle, with rental instruments available. Afternoon sessions focus on the arts, with students picking two choices from poetry, visual arts, or dance. Campers can register for the morning session, afternoon session or all day.

The camp is held in partnership with the Waynesville Parks and Rec Base Camp. Half day cost is $150; full day is $250. Scholarships are available for students on free or reduced lunch.
