Who We Are

Gallery Visitors

The Haywood County Arts Council is a community-driven organization dedicated to promoting artists, advancing art education, and fostering innovation in the arts. We believe creativity brings people together, sparks meaningful conversation, and enriches our community through diverse perspectives and shared experiences.

Our Story

Founded in 1977 by a passionate group of volunteers, the Haywood County Arts Council began with a simple goal: to bring people together through the arts. What started as a grassroots effort has grown into a vibrant organization supporting artists, art education, and creative opportunities throughout the community.

Over the years, we’ve expanded our impact, hiring our first director in 1982, helping launch organizations like the Haywood Regional Arts Theatre, and partnering in the development of downtown Waynesville. Guided by a diverse board and fueled by community support, we continue to evolve while staying rooted in our mission.

Today, we remain committed to fostering creativity, connecting people, and ensuring the arts are accessible and thriving in Haywood County for generations to come.

FAQs

What does HCAC do for the community?

The Haywood County Arts Council (HCAC) supports local artists, provides arts education, and strengthens the community through events, exhibitions, and programs. We operate a Main Street gallery, fund free live music on Main Street, and offer classes for people of all ages. HCAC hosts the Haywood County Studio Tour and manages the Quilt Trails of WNC program, which features painted quilt blocks displayed on buildings, homes, and barns throughout the county. We also provide subgrant funding to local nonprofits offering arts programming, helping to expand access to the arts in Haywood County.

How do I get involved?

There are many ways to get involved with the Haywood County Arts Council (HCAC). You can become an artist member or community member, volunteer in our gallery, at events, or in our Quilt Block Studio painting blocks. You can take classes, participate in the Haywood County Studio Tour as an artist or an art lover, visit our gallery to support local artists, donate, or sponsor an event.

Where does my donation go?

Your donation to the Haywood County Arts Council (HCAC) directly supports arts programs and opportunities in our community. Donations help fund artist exhibitions, classes for all ages, the Kids Art Club (kept affordable for all), free live music, the Haywood County Studio Tour, and the Quilt Trails of WNC program. They also help us keep our gallery on Main Street, covering operating costs like rent and utilities that many grants do not. Donations allow us to host events that bring the creative community together. Every gift helps expand access to the arts throughout Haywood County.
