I make art in the mountains of western North Carolina, on the stolen ancestral lands of the Eastern Cherokee and Yuchi peoples. My interests range widely, from traditional quilting to bookbinding to collage and beyond. I’m a bit of a magpie, gathering materials and knowledge, pulling from different traditions and methods.
A major theme in my work is the Japanese philosophy/concept of wabi-sabi: rusty metal . . . mended pottery . . . sun-faded wood . . . scraps of paper . . . vintage textiles.
My work often focuses on sustainable materials: naturally dyed paper and fabric, antique book pages, secondhand thread, and organic cotton muslin. While the “finished” work may appear simple, the individual materials that I use in my work often involve a long process of dyeing, ageing, and printing with natural materials and processes.
